Blog 5 4/30: Seven Up
Finally, I'm near finished, probably by the time i finish today, I will have my first deck finished. I have only seven cards left. so I'm going to take this time to pick a few cards and go over their design.
First, each commander deck usually has 2 alternate commanders, here are my final(unplaytested) designs
on the flavor aspect, Avacyn is already a well established character in magic. an angel created by a powerful planeswalker (a person with strong magical abilities). she protected her home until she was turned evil by another planeswalker. then she rampages through her home killing indiscriminately until her creator is forced to kill her. this card envisions her recreated, as her old role of protector. protecting tokens as she does her own followers
This design also shows off the deck in a straightforward manner. giving your creatures an advantage in battle (the ability to hit first rather then at the same time) if they are venerated.
This design shows off venerated (this decks signature mechanic see the mechanics blog post for more on venerated) as velon will give other creatures first strike and later additional abilities if they are venerated. moreover velon's second ability can give creatures venerated.
flavor wise velon is a knight of my own design, a legendary hero who would lead troops into battle on behalf of King Mynan(see blog 1). a powerful soldier who raises the morale and power of all those around him.
There are also some other fun designs I have stumbled upon in my journey
You may get an extra turn, but beware, for one of your opponents will also be able to take their turn as well. interestingly enough this creates two triggers, so if you have some way to counter a triggered ability, you may just be able to take an extra turn.
Overall a fun design that I cant wait to see what situations it will be used in
For my final design to show off today I picked this neat card. a card that protects you until your next turn. I wanted to make a card that might help save you as a last resort but I did not want to make it to cheap or too expensive. if its too cheap it might be far too powerful and if its too expensive it is useless when you need it. so i created this. this card allows for players to progressively make it more affordable by having creatures become venerated over time. overall I think it is a neat design that handles a problem in a creative and balanced way
Overall i am happy with my design for this currently but I can't wait to go back to it and edit after designing my second deck.
Congratulations on being so close to finishing the deck! It's clear that you have put a lot of thought and effort into the cards, and I think they will make for a great game. Your strategy in making the last card you showed is also very interesting and a good choice for making the card more effective.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that there was lore in Magic, I honestly thought that the cards just had nonsensical names. Very interesting!
